1. Install problems with Alley 19 Bowling under Windows XP. Many users are receiving an out of space message when trying to install Alley 19 Bowling under Windows XP. Windows XP has a compatibility mode which is necessary to run or install many older games under XP. Use the Program Compatibility Wizard to install and you should not have further problems. To start the Program Compatibility Wizard, go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | Program Compatibility Wizard. Select Windows 98 mode.

2. Install or crash problems with Crystal Caliburn / Loony Labyrinth under Windows XP. If your are receiving an out of space message when trying to install one of these pinball games under Windows XP, then use the Windows XP compatibility mode. Use the Program Compatibility Wizard to install. To start the Program Compatibility Wizard, go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | Program Compatibility Wizard. Select Windows 95 mode. If you're installed okay, but it crashes when you start the game, then read the next section.

If Crystal Caliburn or Loony Labyrinth are crashing when you try to run them, then you must set the proper compatibility mode for each game. To do this, go to your C: drive and open it to go to the C:\Programs directory. Open this directory and find the executible program for the pinball game in one of the sub-directories. Once you have found the ".exe" file for the game, select the icon with one click and then right click. From the contectual menu that pops up, select Properties. Now select the Compatibility tab at the top of the dialog. Put an "X" in the box for Run the program in compatibility mode for: (and choose Windows 95). Now "X" the box for 256 colors and click OK. The game should now work properly.

3. Serial numbers for EXTREME MAC 12-PACK games. You can find all your serial numbers for these games in two places on the CD. 4. Problems with Crystal Caliburn or Loony Labyrinth pinball on new Mac's and MacOS 9.x.- We've had a number of reports of problems with Crystal Caliburn and Loony Labyrinth on the new iMac, iBook and G4 Macs especially with MacOS 9 or Classic mode of MacOS X. If you'd experienced these problems, send an email to support@starplay.com. Provide us with your current serial number. We can provide you with some help for this problem.

5. 10 TONS OF FUN games and MacOS 9 - With the newest version of MacOS 9.0.4 to 9.2.2, CD-ROMs which contain both data and music mount as two separate volumes on the desktop. You need to eject both volumes to eject the CD. This is normal and what you should expect with any data/music CD under MacOS 9. Some games in the 10 TONS OF FUN collection get confused with the way this new MacOS handles music tracks. Some users cannot get the Virtual Pool CD to eject when they finish the game. If you have this problem, you will have to restart your system to eject the CD. Also, if you have any sound problems with Alley 19 Bowling, you may need to try the game again after restarting your computer to ensure the music plays properly.

6. Alley 19 Bowling using Windows ME or XP- - Make sure you're using the newest Windows version of Alley 19 Bowling which is version 1.7. If you don't have it, go to the Masque update page and click the Alley 19 link. It only takes a few minutes to download and it will update your current version to 1.7. This update is only for Windows users. The latest Mac version is 1.5 or 1.5n.

7. With Alley 19 Bowling - ball always curves at end on slow, straight ball - Alley 19 Bowling has been designed to force the ball to curve when you throw a slow, straight ball. This peculiarity was designed into the game when it was discovered it was too easy to get strikes with very slow, straight balls. If you move the mouse a little faster when throwing, you can throw a straight, fast ball which will not curve. It may take a little more practice, but you will be able to make the ball curve or go straight with this knowledge.

8. Installing Crystal Caliburn on Windows - Insert your CD-ROM and use the Windows Run command. Enter "d:\Install" where d: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive. Follow the on-screen instructions. When the installation finishes and the first time you play, you must enter your serial number which can be found in a file called "Quick Start-SERIAL NUMBER" or "Read Me-SERIAL NUMBER" now on your hard disk.

9. Installer freezes or quits with an error on a Mac. - Restart your system with extensions off (hold the shift key down at start-up). Now run the Installer. Restart your system with the extensions back on. Note, if installing from a CD-ROM, your must keep some CD-ROM extensions enabled like "Apple CD-ROM", etc. or you won't be able to access your CD-ROM drive. Use your Extension Manager software to selectively turn off the other extensions.

Crystal Caliburn Macintosh

Questions and Answers

Q: Where do I find my serial number?
A:
If your copy of Crystal Caliburn came in a box on floppy disk, check for your serial number on the back of your Player Guide. If your copy of Crystal Caliburn came in a jewel case on a CD-ROM, your serial number is in the CD-ROM booklet on page 4 (Note: the serial number is different for Mac and Windows) and in a file called Quick Start- Read Me on your CD-ROM (serial number contains the letters CCM).

Q. Game locking up on a Mac AV models with System 7.6 and System 8.
A.
We have found a problem with Crystal Caliburn and Loony Labyrinth pinball on certain AV models using System 7.6 or System 8. Apparently, the Sound Manager which is built into these new systems is causing problems with some games including Crystal Caliburn and Loony Labyrinth. You can turn the sound off from the menu before starting a game and you should be able to play. We are still investigating this problem and will post more when information becomes available.

Q. Can't get it to launch or sound is not working with Crystal Caliburn or my other games.
A.
We have found that some systems are having problems with Apple's newest sound manager version 3.2.1 which is automatically installed with Crystal Caliburn. Drag the file "Sound Manager" out of your Extension folder which is inside your System folder. Restart your system and the problem should go away. System 7.5 and newer operating systems can work without this sound manager.

Q: I've entered the serial number exactly as printed, but it won't work?
A:
Serial numbers are 16 characters long. Make sure you enter ones as "1" and not "L". The full serial number is made up of numbers, letters, and a dash. Also, there should be no blanks between characters or blanks at the end of the serial number.

Q: Crystal Caliburn worked fine yesterday, but today I get an "Application file is damaged ..." error message. What happened?
A:
A couple of things could have happened. First and most serious is the possibility of a virus infection. Disinfect your hard drive using a good virus checking program. If you were infected, reinstall Crystal Caliburn after you have cleaned your hard drive. Another possibility is if you changed or updated your computer hardware from the last time you played. If this is the case, re-install from the master disk. (Crystal Caliburn configures itself to your exact environment and will be affected by a hardware change.)

Q: What do I do if I don't have a HD (1.4 MB) floppy drive?
A:
Call StarPlay Tech Support and ask for the free disk exchange service.

Q: I cannot install the program. I encountered an error message similar to "... is locked" or "write protected".
A:
Check the files "Crystal Caliburn 1.03" or "Crystal Caliburn 1.03 Data" to see if they are locked. Do this by selecting each file and choosing Get Info from the File menu. If the files are locked, unlock them and try again. If you are using a removable disk, please unprotect the volume before installation.

Q: Program won't launch. Error message is similar to "... is not installed properly".
A:
Crystal Caliburn will not work on a network server. You must install it on your hard drive. Also, Crystal Caliburn configures itself to your machine to optimize the playing action. If you have upgraded your machine, updated your system software or have any hardware changes, you need to re-install from the master disk.

Q: My PowerBook external monitor won't show the flippers and the game is cropped on the bottom, what do I do?
A:
Make sure that "Video Mirroring" is set to Off, and restart your machine.

Q: I get a "Video card which has 8 bit color capability is required" error message even though I have an 8 bit video card installed. What do I do?
A:
This is most likely to occur if you have two monitors on your machine. Make sure that the color monitor (8-bit video card) is the one with the menu bar. This is done in the Monitors control panel. Remember to restart after any changes.

Q: I have installed everything like the manual instructed me to, but I still get an "Application is damaged" error. Why?
A:
There might be a possibility of the distribution disk being damaged. Please ask for an exchange disk.

Q: I can't open either the "Crystal Caliburn HighScore" or the "Crystal Caliburn Score Log" files. When I click on their icons, they launch the game.
A:
You can open the "Crystal Caliburn Score Log" using TeachText or most word processing programs. Some spread sheet programs will open it too. First launch TeachText, then open the "Crystal Caliburn Score Log" using TeachText's Open command. The "Crystal Caliburn HighScore" file can't be opened with general applications as it is used to create an internal HighScore Report file. When you choose Create HighScore Report from the Option menu, it will read this file and create a TeachText file. Use TeachText to make a printout for the contest application.

Troubleshooting

Insufficient memory or conflicts with system extensions or control panels is a common source of problems.
Even though you have the recommended amount of RAM, you may have control panels or system extensions which leave less than the minimum required by the application to operate. The System 7 operating system can easily take 3 MB or more of memory by itself. If you're low on memory or experiencing conflicts, make sure you quit any open applications. To check if you have the minimum amount of RAM available, choose "About This Macintosh" under the Apple menu. If the application still won't run, try the following:

Restart your computer with only the minimum necessary system extensions and control panels.
Using the Extension Manager or third party products like Conflict Catcher, turn off all unnecessary extensions and control panels. Restart your computer and try to run the application again. If the problem goes away, the problem is caused by one of your extensions, not the application. If the problem persists, and you cannot find an answer in the following error message section, contact StarPlay Technical Support.

Users of Connectix-RAM Doubler
All StarPlay programs are compatible with RAM Doubler. However, if you are experiencing problems with crackly sound or uneven ball movement, RAM Doubler could be the cause. If you have enough real memory, try rebooting with RAM Doubler turned off.

Questions and Answers

Q: Where do I find my serial number?
A:
If your copy came in a bundle pack with other games, then the serial number is in a file called "Quick Start - read me" which will be on your hard disk after you install. If your copy of Crystal Caliburn came in a box on floppy disk, check for your serial number on the back of your Player Guide. If your copy of Crystal Caliburn came in a jewel case on a CD-ROM, your serial number is in the CD-ROM booklet on page 1 (Note: the serial number is different for Mac and Windows) and in a file called Quick Start- Read Me on your CD-ROM (serial number contains the letters CCW).

Q: After a few minutes of play, Crystal Caliburn locks up on my system. What's wrong?
A:
Check to make sure you don't have a screen saver that "kicks in" after a few minutes. The screen saver may have a conflict with Crystal Caliburn. Turn off the screen saver and try playing again.

Q: I've entered the serial number exactly as it is on the back of the manual, but it won't work?
A:
Serial numbers are 16 characters long. Make sure you enter ones as "1" and not "L". The full serial number is made up of numbers, letters, and a dash. Also, there should be no blanks between characters or blanks at the end of the serial number.

A:
Call StarPlay Technical Support and ask for the free disk exchange service. You will be sent two 5 1/4" disks with installation instructions.

Q: Crystal Caliburn is installed on my external hard disk. I attached the disk to a new computer and Crystal Caliburn won't run. What happened?
A:
Reinstall from the master disk onto the new computer. (Crystal Caliburn configures itself to your exact environment and will not run on a different CPU until you reinstall.)

Troubleshooting

A common source of problems is not having a computer which meets the system requirements and problems with insufficient memory. If you have less than 4 MB RAM, you must add memory to your system. Computers with 4 MB RAM may experience jerky or uneven ball movement due to insufficient memory if your computer is loaded with other drivers and memory-resident software. First check that your computer meets the system requirements.

Processor speed - Your computer must have a 386 DX-33 MHz or faster processor such as a 486 or Pentium processor. Slower processors such as a 386 SX20 or the 386 SL20 in laptops are not supported. If your computer is too slow to run Crystal Caliburn, your retailer should give you a refund or exchange.

Display - On 4 MB systems, you should use 640x480 resolution and 256 color mode. If you have 8 MB or more of RAM, you can use 800x600 resolution and 256 colors. You may get good results at an even higher resolution and more colors if you have a very fast computer.

Sound - Update to the latest version of sound driver software. You must have a sound card with external speakers to get sound. Experiment with the different versions (A or B) of Back Ground Music (BGM) in the Option menu to see which works best with your sound card.

Windows Multi-tasking - To get the maximum speed from your PC, exit all applications, except Program Manager, before running Crystal Caliburn. This will also help in maximizing memory usage. Because Windows is a multi-tasking operating system, several applications may work concurrently, but each application will run slower.

Memory - Windows 3.1 needs 3 MB or more of free RAM for Crystal Caliburn to animate the ball and play sounds correctly. Windows supports the use of virtual memory which is different than real memory. Virtual memory uses a portion of the hard disk to swap memory back and forth to simulate additional real memory. This works well in most applications, but it is not fast enough to keep up with smooth ball animation necessary in Crystal Caliburn. It is important to give Windows as much real memory as possible, so that it seldom has to use virtual memory when running Crystal Caliburn.

You may check to see how much RAM Windows has to work with by Exiting Windows and running the MEM command from the DOS prompt. The Total memory - Free column should be over 3000K for Crystal Caliburn to run smoothly.

Your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files contain commands which start up other applications, memory-resident programs, RAM disks, and drivers. To free up memory, you may want to eliminate the use of a RAMDrive if present. If you use EMM386.EXE or other expanded memory emulators, decreasing or disabling the expanded memory may improve performance. SMARTDrive helps speed up disk access, but also takes real memory away from Windows.

Alley 19 Bowling - Windows 95/98/ME/XP

Questions and Answers

Q. Why does the installer say I'm out of space when I try to install?
A.
If you are installing Alley 19 Bowling under Windows XP, then you need to run the Compatibility Wizard. See the FAQ at the top of this page for detailed information.

Q. Where is my serial number?
A.
Alley 19 Bowling doesn't require a serial number. Just leave the space blank on your registration card and send it in to StarPlay.

Q. What are the System requirements for Alley 19?
A.
Alley 19 Bowling is designed under Windows 95 and will also work with Windows 98, ME & XP. It does not run under Windows 3.1. It will run on a Windows NT or 2000 system if installed manually, but the current installer does not run under NT. You need a 60 MHz or faster Pentium computer, 256 color display or better, 16 MB of RAM, a Windows compatible sound card and a CD-ROM drive. The installation will require about 14 MB of hard disk space.

Q. I'm having problems getting the sound and music to play properly. What should I do?
A.
Alley 19 Bowling should work fine on most all Windows 95 or 98 computers and play the Sound Effects and Music. If you're not sure if you have the lastest sound drivers, you can re-install Alley 19 and force DirectX to install by checking the box in the install dialog. DirectX (from Microsoft) has new sound and video drivers which update most systems. You can also go to the sound card manufacturer's web or AOL site to find new drivers for downloading.

Keep in mind that Alley 19 uses two types of sound. The Sound Effects (when the ball rolls, voices, etc) and the '50 music which plays from the CD. The CD must be in the drive to hear the music. (External CD-ROM drives require special cables back to the computer or a direct connection to speakers in order to hear the music).

If you are not getting sound, check the following Windows settings:

In Windows 95, verify that the sound volume controls are not turned down or muted. From your Start menu select Programs | Accessories | Multimedia | Volume Control. The Master Volume setting controls everything and Wave volume and CD Audio volume control the volume for sound effects and music respectively coming from Alley 19. Make sure the volume is up and that they are not muted.

Here is a method to see if your system if properly configured for sound and music. The Alley 19 sound effects are played from .wav files. You can double-click any ".wav" file on your hard disk to see if your system is playing ".wav" files properly. To check the music, put any music CD into your CD-ROM drive and try and play it. (Alley 19 is a music CD from track 2 forward and can be used for this test, but you may want to use a regular music CD for your own validation). From your Windows 95 Start menu select Programs | Accessories | Multimedia | CD Player. Now you should be able to play the music from the CD.

If your system is not playing sounds or music properly, then it will not play sounds (or music) from Alley 19 or any other game. In this case, you must get help from another source, like your computer manufacturer or the maker of your sound card. It is important to always have the latest sound drivers. Again, these can normally be downloaded from the Internet or AOL when you go to the manufacturer's site.

Also check the following after you have started up the Alley 19 game.

Sound Effects - The volume can be adjusted inside the game through Prefs and by hitting the space bar in the Alley screen to bring up the Option menu. Make sure the volume level is turned up.

Music - You must have the CD in the CD-ROM drive to hear the '50's music. There is a volume control in the Alley screen if you hit the space bar. Make sure that the volume is turned up. You can also skip to new music tracks from this Option menu. Note that external CD-ROM drives require special cables back to the computer or a direct connection to speakers in order to hear the music

Q. I'm having install problems or the game just won't work?
A.
Alley 19 Bowling should work fine on most all Windows 95 or 98 systems. Most problems of this type can be corrected by doing the following:

1. Delete the game files or un-install the game.

2. Run ScanDisk to validate the integrity of your hard disk. Your hard disk files and directories can easily get out of synchronization which each other (especially if the computer is not shut down properly). From your Start menu select Programs | Accessories | System Tools | ScanDisk. Select your hard drive and run the Standard test. This will make sure your files and directories are not corrupted.

3. Now Re-install the game from the CD. If you continue to have problems, most likely the problem is with your video or sound drivers. These software drivers are what Windows uses to talk to your sound card in your computer or to your display monitor. Computer games use more functionality than something like a word processor. It is important to have the latest sound and video software drivers for the animation and sound used by a game to work properly. When your drivers are old or improperly setup, it can cause the game to not work at all, run the animation extremely slow even on a fast computer, and/or make the screen go blank. Even a new computer may not have the latest drivers needed by games.

You can call the manufacturer of your computer or sound card to get information on getting the latest drivers. Also, these software drivers for sound cards and monitors are usually available for downloading from the manufacturers web or AOL site. Here is an Internet site which we've found to be of help in locating the proper drivers for downloading - http://www.windrivers.com/company.htm.

Alley 19 Bowling - Mac

First, make sure you're using the lastest version (v1.1.2 or v1.5n). If you don't have at least v1.1.2, then download the updater from this site. It will only take a few minutes. This update fixes several bugs and type 11 crashes. It also keeps the turkeys from coming out too often!

Questions and Answers

Q. Where is my serial number?
A.
Alley 19 Bowling doesn't require a serial number. Just leave the space blank on your registration card and send it in to StarPlay.

Q. When I get to the bowling alley, I can't move my players with the mouse. Nothing happens. Sometimes one player will sit in another players lap!
A.
Turn off File Sharing on your computer. On System 7, goto the Sharing Setup Control Panel. On System 8, go to the File Sharing Control Panel. This problem occurs most often when you've done an Easy Install (partial install of Alley 19). It is caused when the game goes to access more files on the CD-ROM during game play. You may be able to play with File Sharing left on if you do a Full Install from the Alley 19 Bowling Installer.

Q. Can't get it to launch or sound is not working with Alley 19 or my other games.
A.
We have found that some systems are having problems with Apple's newest sound manager version 3.2.1 which is automatically installed with Alley 19. Drag the file "Sound Manager" out of your Extension folder which is inside your System folder. Restart your system and the problem should go away. System 7.5 and newer operating systems can work without this sound manager.

Q. Alley 19 works fine but sometimes crashes or locks up after I have bowled a few frames or when the "turkeys" come out.
A.
This is normally caused by a low memory situation. Select the Alley 19 application icon and do a Get Info from the File menu of the finder. Change the minimum memory size to 6000 and the preferred memory size to 10,000. Try these values out. Now try launching and playing again. You can also experiment with other sizes based on the amount of memory you have in your system. If you have an 8 MB system, you will probably want to use RAM Doubler or turn on virtual memory. You must restart after turning on virtual memory.

If you have enough hard disk space (approx. 30 MB), you may want to do a full install instead of the easy install. This has cleared up problems on some systems. You do not need to throw away anything before doing a full install on top of a previous easy install. Your folder will be automatically updated.

Q: I don't have much memory on my machine, how can I play with four bowlers?
A:
You can save a lot of memory by choosing pairs of the same player type or even have all four bowlers be the same. You can also save memory by having all players choose the same ball color.

Q: Will Alley 19 run on my old 030 processor Mac?
A:
Even though StarPlay only supports the 040 and Power Macintosh processors, Alley 19 will run on machines like the LCIII and the IICi which use the 030 processor. The loading times for the bowlers will be slow, but the overall game play will be OK.

Most systems should experience no difficulties running Alley 19. However, a small percentage of systems may experience occasional system conflicts or have insufficient memory. Many of these problems are quite easy to fix using the information provided below.

Problem 1: I don't have enough free memory to play Alley 19.

Here are several solutions to increase your free memory:

Make sure you have quit all other open applications before launching Alley 19. Pull down the menu icon in the top right corner of your screen to see if you have any other applications running. If so, Quit them.

Don't load unnecessary extensions. Extensions Manager comes with System 7.5. Turn off any unnecessary extensions and reboot. The only extension that Alley 19 requires is "Apple CD-ROM" (or other CD-ROM driver, if you own a non-Apple CD-ROM drive) and Sound Manager.

We suggest this minimum list of Extensions for Systems 7.5 through 7.5.5:Apple CD-ROM, Foreign File Access, Sound Manager, and your Apple controlpanels.

Additionally, we recommend that any graphics acceleration extensionsyou may have be kept active. For example the "7200 Graphics Acceleration"extension on the PowerMac 7200 series.

The above lists are for the Apple Extensions Manager, if you are usinga different Extension Manager (Conflict Catcher, Now Startup) then the listmay be slightly different.

Turn down your disk cache (in the Memory control panel). 64K is adequatefor most modern Macintoshes, except in specific rare cases.

If you have done the above and there is still not enough free memory, use RAM Doubler or go to the "Memory" control panel, and turnon Virtual Memory. When you turn Virtual Memory on, it will default to twiceyour built-in memory, or the Available on Disk, whichever is lower. Foroptimal performance, please lower this to 2 megabytes above your built-inmemory.

Example: On a PowerMac with 8 MB of RAM, turning on Virtual Memory willautomatically set Virtual Memory to "After Restart 16 MB". Youwould then lower this number to read 10 MB, close the Memory Control Panel, and restart your Mac.

Problem 2: I don't get any music during the game

The 50's background music is stored as audio files on the Alley 19 CD.First, make certain your Sound control panel, Sound In [Options], must beset to Internal CD and Playthrough. You must have the Alley 19 CD in aninternal drive to get the music, as external CD-ROM drives can only transferdata, not music, unless they are hooked up with special cables. If you dohave an external CD-ROM drive, please check to see if it has any Audio Outjacks. If it does, you may be able to hook the Audio Out of your CD-ROMdrive to the Audio In of your Mac. You may also wish to connect externalspeakers directly to your CD-ROM drive and the Audio Out jacks.

Problem 3: My Mac freezes every so often when playing Alley 19

Make sure you don't have other applications running that use up neededmemory. If you only have an 8 MB system, use RAM Doubler or turn on virtualmemory to give your computer more memory. You should be using v1.1.2 ornewer of Alley 19. If you have Soumd Manager 3.2.1 in your extension folder, then move it out and re-start your system. Check to make sure that you don'thave Calculate Folder Sizes turned on in the Views control panel. This causesthe Finder to scan your hard disk whenever it thinks the computer is idle.Go to the Views control panel, and uncheck the Calculate Folder Sizes checkboxwhile playing Alley 19.

Insufficient memory or conflicts with system extensions or controlpanels is a common source of problems.

Even though you have the recommended amount of RAM, you may have controlpanels or system extensions which leave less than the minimum required bythe application to operate. The System 7 operating system can easily take3 MB or more of memory by itself. If you're low on memory or experiencingconflicts, make sure you quit any open applications. To check if you havethe minimum amount of RAM available, choose "About This Macintosh"under the Apple menu. If the application still won't run, try the following:

Restart your computer with only the minimum necessary system extensionsand control panels.

Using the Extension Manager or third party products like Conflict Catcher, turn off all unnecessary extensions and control panels. Restart your computerand try to run the application again. If the problem goes away, the problemis caused by one of your extensions, not the application. If the problempersists, and you cannot find an answer in the following error message section, contact StarPlay Technical Support.

Users of Connectix-RAM Doubler

All StarPlay programs are compatible with RAM Doubler. However, if youare experiencing problems with crackly sound or uneven ball movement, RAMDoubler could be the cause. If you have enough real memory, try rebootingwith RAM Doubler turned off.

Optimizing Performance

Display

Use 256 color mode.
Use 800x600 resolution if possible (640x480 is also OK).
Update display driver software for your video board.
Choose 'Full Screen' from Option Menu.
Loony Labyrinth is optimized for 256 colors. The program is compatible withother color modes, but performance may be affected.

Sound

Update sound driver. Well-designed sound hardware and driver softwarewill improve the quality and performance of your applications. In LoonyLabyrinth, the performance of the sound system can affect the smoothnessof ball movement.

Multi-Task

Windows is a multi-task operating system and it may run two or more applicationsat once. However, performance of each application may be affected. To getmaximum speed out of your PC, exit all applications except Loony Labyrinth. This will also help with memory usage.

Memory

If you experience disk accesses during the game, try to reduce the sizeof the RAM Disk or Disk cache program. This might improve the performanceof Loony Labyrinth.

It's very important to have a large block of physical memory installedfor Windows. Generally, the RAM Disk program and the Disk cache programtake memory away from Windows.

Questions and Answers

Q: Loony Labyrinth worked fine yesterday, but today I get an "Applicationfile is damaged ..." error message. What happened?
A:
A couple of things could have happened. First and most serious isthe possibility of a virus infection. Disinfect your hard drive using agood virus checking program. If you were infected, reinstall Loony Labyrinthafter you have cleaned your hard drive. Another possibility is if you changedor updated your computer hardware from the last time you played. If thisis the case, reinstall from the CD-ROM. (Loony Labyrinth configures itselfto your exact environment and will be affected by a hardware change.)

Q: Loony Labyrinth is installed on my external hard disk. I attachedthe disk to a new computer and Loony Labyrinth won't run. What happened?
A:
Reinstall from the CD-ROM onto the new computer. (Loony Labyrinthconfigures itself to your exact environment and will not run on a differentCPU until you reinstall.)

Q: I've entered the serial number exactly as it is on the back ofthe manual, but why won't it work?
A:
Serial numbers are 16 characters long. Make sure you enter ones as"1" and not "L". The full serial number is made up ofnumbers, letters, and a dash. Also, there should be no blanks between charactersor blanks at the end of the serial number.

Q: Do I have to install the WinG graphics library to play Loony Labyrinth?
A:
No, the WinG library is not necessary, only the WIN32S library (forWindows 3.1 users). WinG is a graphics enhancement extension that can beused on faster machines with a lot of RAM.

ShadowWraith

Insufficient memory or conflicts with system extensions or controlpanels is a common source of problems.

Even though you have 8 MB RAM, you may have control panels or systemextensions which leave less than the minimum 4950K required by ShadowWraithto operate. The System 7 operating system can take 2 MB or more of memoryby itself. If you're low on memory or experiencing conflicts, make sureyou quit any open applications. To check if you have the minimum amountof RAM available, choose "About This Macintosh" under the Applemenu. If ShadowWraith still won't run, try the following:

Restart your computer without loading the added system extensionsor control panels.

To do this hold down the Shift key as the Macintosh restarts to temporarilydisable extensions and control panels. If the problem goes away, the problemis caused by one of your extensions, not the ShadowWraith program. If theproblem persists, and you cannot find an answer in the following error messagesection, contact Technical Support.
NOTE: If you are playing ShadowWraith from the CD-ROM, you'll needto leave the Apple CD-ROM extension on. Also, if you are playing on a PowerMacintosh, you'll need to leave the Sound Manager extension on. With System7.5 or higher, use the Extension Manager to turn off all extensions exceptthose required.

Users of Connectix-RAM Doubler

ShadowWraith is compatible with RAM Doubler. However, if you are experiencingproblems with uneven ship movement or crackly sound, RAM Doubler could bethe cause. Try rebooting your computer with RAM Doubler turned off.

NOTE: You'll receivethis dialog box every time you load ShadowWraith. If you want this doneautomatically, check the appropriate box in the Interface and Controls sectionof Preferences.

Q: I use thousands of colors on my monitor. Do I have to switch to256 colors to play ShadowWraith?
A:
If your monitor is on a setting other than 256 colors, you'll receivea dialog box asking to change your monitor depth. When you quit ShadowWraith, you'll receive a dialog box asking to change your monitor depth to its originalsetting. NOTE: If you want this done automatically, check the appropriateboxes in the Interface and Controls section of Preferences.

Q: Do I have to look at the company logos every time I play ShadowWraith?
A:
To skip through the company logo splash screens, press the mousebutton until you get to the main menu screen.

Q: How do I access the menu bar?
A:
Press the ESC key or Command-P to pause the game and access the menubar.

Q: When I load ShadowWraith, the sound stutters. What can I do?
A:
If you are running ShadowWraith from the CD-ROM, you might try copyingthe ShadowWraith folder to your hard disk (you must have at least 15 MBof free disk space). If you are running from the hard disk and you are experiencingproblems, make sure you have Sound Manager 3.0 or higher running (SoundManager 3.1 is included on the CD-ROM). If you are still experiencing problems,it could be caused by RAM Doubler or another extension conflict. See theError Message section for information on disabling extensions.

Q: When I insert the ShadowWraith CD-ROM in my drive, I get a messagesimilar to...disk is unreadable.
A:
There might be a possibility of the CD-ROM being damaged. Pleaseask the StarPlay technical support office for a new CD-ROM.

Q: I've entered the serial number exactly as it is on the back ofthe player guide. Why won't it work?
A:
Serial numbers are 16 characters long. Make sure you enter ones as"1" and not "L". The full serial number is made up ofnumbers, letters and a dash. Also, there should be no blanks between charactersor blanks at the end of the serial number.

Souls inthe System

Q. Can't get it to launch or sound is not working with Souls in theSystem or my other games.
A.
We have found that some systems are having problems with Apple'snewest sound manager version 3.2.1 which is automatically installed withSouls in the System. Drag the file "Sound Manager" out of yourExtension folder which is inside your System folder. Restart your systemand the problem should go away. System 7.5 and newer operating systems canwork without this sound manager.

Problem 1: I don't have enough free memory to play Souls in the System

Here are several solutions to increase your free memory:

Have Souls in the System quit all applications, including the Finder, when it starts up. Quitting the Finder will free 150K or more of memory(depending on how much extra memory Finder uses to display windows, etc.).

Don't load unnecessary extensions. Extensions Manager comes with System7.5. Turn off any unnecessary extensions and reboot. The only extensionthat Souls in the System requires is "Apple CD-ROM" (or otherCD-ROM driver, if you own a non-Apple CD-ROM drive)

We suggest this minimum list of Extensions for Systems 7.5 through 7.5.2:Display Enabler, Apple CD-ROM, Foreign File Access, Sound Manager, and yourApple control panels.

For System 7.5.3 we recommend: Apple CD-ROM, Foreign File Access, SoundManager, and your Apple control panels.

If you have System 7.5.3 then Display Enabler is built into the SystemSoftware, and will not show up in the Extensions Manager.

Additionally, we recommend that any graphics acceleration extensionsyou may have be kept active. For example the "7200 Graphics Acceleration"extension on the PowerMac 7200 series.

The above lists are for the Apple Extensions Manager, if you are usinga different EM (Conflict Catcher, Now Startup) then the list may be slightlydifferent.

If you intend to play a network game, you will need to add the applicablenetwork extensions to your Souls in the System extension set.

Example: On a PowerMac with 8 Mb of RAM, turning on Virtual Memory willautomatically set Virtual Memory to "After Restart 16 M". Youwould then lower this number to read 10 M, close the Memory Control Panel, and restart your Mac.

Problem 2: Souls in the System is giving me a "MacintoshError: Type 28"

If Souls in the System is giving you a "Type 28" error on startup or after the "Start Up Options" screen, and you are using System7.5.3, then you probably have a file called "ThreadsLib" in yourExtensions folder. The ThreadsLib file is built into System 7.5.3, and ifyou have a copy of it in your Extensions folder it can cause this problem. Please move the "ThreadsLib" file to the Trash, restart your Mac,and then empty the Trash. Souls in the System should work afterwards.

Problem 3: I don't get any music during the game

Level music is stored as audio files on the Souls in the System CD. First, make certain that "CD Audio Source" pop-up in the Startup Optionsdialog is set to the correct source for your CD-ROM drive . You must havethe CD-ROM in an internal drive to get the music, as external CD-ROM drivescan only transfer data, not music. If you do have an external CD-ROM drive, please check to see if it has any Audio Out jacks. If it does, you may beable to hook the Audio Out of your CD-ROM drive to the Audio In of yourMac. You may also wish to connect external speakers directly to your CD-ROMdrive

Problem 4: My Mac freezes every so often when playing Souls in theSystem

Check to make sure that you don't have Calculate Folder Sizes turnedon in the Views control panel. This causes the Finder to scan your harddisk whenever it thinks the computer is idle. Go to the Views control panel, and uncheck the Calculate Folder Sizes checkbox while playing Souls in theSystem.

Another possible cause is hitting an external volume control while Soulsin the System is playing a cutscene (movie). Please refrain from alteringthe volume with external volume controls when you are not in gameplay.

Questions and Answers

Q: After opening Souls in the System, I received a dialog box askingto turn off all open applications and the Finder. Do I need to do this?
A:
Souls in the System needs 6200K of RAM to run with all of the soundfeatures. Turning off or quitting all open applications and the Finder willfree up additional RAM to optimize Souls in the System's performance. NOTE:You'll receive this dialog box every time you load Souls in the System unlessyou choose "Don't Ask Next Time".

Q: Do I have to look at the company logos every time I play Soulsin the System?
A:
No, press the mouse button until you get to the main menu screento skip the introductory logo screens and/or movies.

Q: How do I access the menu bar?
A:
Press the ESC key or Command-P to pause an active game. Move yourmouse to the top of the screen and the menu bar will appear.

Q: When I load Souls in the System, the sound stutters. What can Ido?
A:
Make sure you've quit all other open applications. If you have atleast 12 MB of real memory, you may want to turn off virtual memory or RAMDoubler. Make sure you have the latest QuickTime 2.5 and Sound Manager 3.2.1or later installed. These should have been installed automatically for youunless you chose Custom Install in the installer. If you are still experiencingproblems, it could be caused by another extension conflict. See the ErrorMessage section for information on disabling extensions.

Q: I've entered the serial number exactly as it is on the front ofthe Quick Instruction Card. Why won't it work?
A:
Serial numbers are 16 characters long. Make sure you enter ones as"1" and not "L". The full serial number is 16 characterslong and is made up of numbers, letters and a dash. Also, there should beno blanks between characters or blanks at the end of the serial number.Try quitting the game and starting over if the serial number is rejected.

Remember, the standard serial number contains "SSM". Alwaysuse this number unless you're installing a second copy for network playonly. The network only serial number contains "SNM".

Q: When I double-click the Souls in the System application I get anerror and it won't start up. Why won't it work?
A:
There could be several reasons. If you're using the Open Transportconnection method, then you must have the NetSprocketLib module in yourSystem Extension folder. If you're using "classic" AppleTalk networking, you must remove NetSprocketLib from the System Extension Folder and restartyour computer. The Display Enabler and Display Library system extensionsare also required on some systems especially non-US MacOS systems. All theseextensions may be installed from your original CD-ROM by choosing CustomInstall from the Souls in the System Installer. They're normally installedautomatically for you with the Easy Install option.

Q: Is there any way to play Souls in the System without the CD-ROMin the drive?
A:
No, due to the size of the music and video files, you must have theCD-ROM in your drive.
